What a whiteboard does well, and where it stops

Tracking systems die from update friction

The one number that runs production tracking

Job counts and completion percentages describe volume. Ageing describes trouble. A job that has not moved in nine days is a problem whether or not the factory is busy, and it is invisible in every other view because a stationary job looks identical to a moving one until somebody checks the date.
Sort open jobs by ageing every morning and work from the top. It is the shortest daily review a factory can run, and in most units the same three or four causes appear at the top of that list every week, which is where the improvement work should go.
One caveat that comes with the number: ageing is only as honest as the last update. A tracking system that is updated twice a week produces ageing figures that are wrong in a way that looks precise. If the ageing report is not believable, the problem is update friction, not the report.
