The corrections are the batch

A paint batch is made in two stages that most systems treat as one. The base is charged to formulation, which is predictable. Then the batch is matched to shade, and matching is iterative: a small addition, a draw-down, a comparison, another addition. It stops when the operator judges it acceptable.

Everything that matters commercially happens in the second stage. The tinter consumed in corrections is expensive material that the formulation does not account for. The time consumed holds the mill and delays the next batch. And the number of corrections a shade typically needs is the single best predictor of whether that product is actually profitable at the price it is sold for.

In most plants none of this is recorded, because the correction is a physical act at the vessel and writing it down is somebody else's benefit. The batch card shows the formulation, the stock shows tinter consumed in aggregate, and the connection between the two is never made.

Recording each addition as it happens turns three questions into answers. Which shades routinely need correction, which operators reach shade with fewer additions, and whether a particular batch went wrong because of the material or the method. It is a small entry at the vessel and it is the highest-value data in the plant.

When a shade will not come right, look at the lot

Pigments, extenders and resins vary between lots. The variation is within specification and it is still enough to shift a shade, particularly on deep or complex colours where several pigments interact.

The experienced tinting operator knows this and compensates, which is exactly why it stays invisible. The compensation happens as extra corrections, absorbed into the batch, and the underlying cause is never established. Three batches of the same shade drifting the same way in the same week is a pattern, and if lot identity is not carried into the batch record there is nothing to correlate it against.
